A workshop on “Tackling Plastic Pollution for a Sustainable Marine Future: A Source to Solution Approach” was organized by SCIP Plastics Project at Civil Engineering department of CUET on 22nd January, 2024. The chief guest at the event was CUET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam. The Dean of Civil Engineering Department and Scientific Expert of SCIP Plastics Project, prof. Dr. Sudip Kumar Pal; Head of Department of Civil Engineering Professor Dr. Aysha Akter, Registrar (Additional Charge) Prof. Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, were present as special guests among the others. In the speech of the chief guest, Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said, “Currently, there is excessive plastic pollution in the marine area of
Bangladesh. About seven hundred species of animals are adversely affected by this pollution. Even some animals are now almost endangered due to this plastic pollution”. After the discussion, a workshop was conducted with the participants, consisting of 4th-year graduating students from the Civil Engineering Department. SCIP Plastics Project members Niloy Das and Farjana Khan presented their research findings to the students. Under the SCIP Plastics Project a master plan has been proposed to assess the feasibility of using jute as an alternative to plastic products. Through which it will be possible to get guidelines to ensure sustainable marine environment in the Bay of Bengal and other coastal areas of the country by reducing the use of plastic waste in the sea and coastal areas. Participants engaged in group discussions on “Waste Sorting for Sustainable Waste Management” and “Plastic-Free Movement in Student Hall at CUET.” The workshop concluded with
participants sharing their views, and certificates were provided to them.
